An out-of-this-world fundraiser

Fifty years ago this month, the world watched in awe as the Apollo 11 astronauts took humanity’s first steps on the moon. The moon landing was a remarkable achievement—one that was only made possible by the American people’s investment in the bold vision put forth by John F. Kennedy less than a decade earlier: “We choose to go to the moon.”

Homewood Science Center’s mission is more down to earth, but no less visionary. We inspire scientific wonder, learning, and pursuit. We’re working to make our region a hub for scientific literacy, education, and employment.

Please join us July 18, 2019 to celebrate the anniversary of the moon landing and toast the future of South Suburban scientific achievement at Cocktail Chemistry Challenge, a fundraiser to support Homewood Science Center programs.

The challenge

Cocktail Chemical Challenge is brought to you by Dober. Come enjoy a night on the town as Copper Still Martini Bar & Lounge, Lassen’s Tap, LaVoute Bistro + Bar, and The Well at the Distillery compete in an Iron Chef-inspired bartending battle to mix the best cocktail using rose water, citrus, and CO2—ingredients inspired by The Moonwalk, a cocktail invented in 1969 for the Apollo 11 astronauts (and reportedly the first drink enjoyed by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin when they emerged from quarantine after returning to earth).

Special guest Emily Bohn, bartender at the renown Maple Tree Inn in Blue Island, will bring her award-winning mixology skills to the judging this year.

Last year’s Cocktail Chemistry Challenge sold out weeks in advance. Thanks in part to venue sponsor Tito's Handmade Vodka, we're excited to welcome even more guests this year to our new party venue, Ravisloe Country Club. The Weglarz Company and John and Elizabeth Oliver are providing appetizers and Leonard J. LeRose Jr. Ltd. is supplying Uber transportation codes. Aurelio’s Pizza, Homewood Florist, and Krispy Kreme Donuts are also supporting the event, which will include craft cocktail tastings, an open bar, gourmet party bites, live music by The Resonators, a showcase of Homewood Science Center programs, STEAM challenges, a silent auction (online bidding is open!), and more.

A trajectory for success

Donations to Homewood Science Center unleash the potential of students like Amirah Muhammad, an aspiring pharmacist studying chemistry at Xavier University of Louisiana, who says our Girls STEAM Ahead program helped her become the leader she is today. Or Joshua Jury, a middle schooler who called our conservation ecology internship a“once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

At Homewood Science Center, we choose to go to the moon for Amirah and Joshua; for the schoolkids who attend field trips at the science center; the families who come to PopUp SCIENCE to learn together about subjects like engineering and sustainability; and the many other people, schools, and businesses who benefit from our programs.

NASA aerospace engineer Jeffrey Woytach, who spoke at Homewood Science Center this spring, was impressed by the caliber of Southland students and said the science center “should be held up as an example of success for all such organizations.”
