I was half listening to Fareed Zakaria GPS when I heard this statement from General Electric's CEO. Why did his comment get my attention? At Homewood Science Center, we want to hear from businesses about the skills they are looking for in their employees. Right now, not enough of our youth have access to quality Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) learning opportunities. And that is why we created the South Suburban STEAM Network. We aim to facilitate communication between educators and businesses.

Mr. Immelt clearly articulated that his workers need to be able to work with tools and computers to excel at work. This is important information to know as we and others develop programs for young people to explore and connect with STEAM.

We believe that children should engage in tinkering because not only is it fun, but it is also a powerful way to learn. Homewood Science Center has developed making workshops such as Cardboard Creations and Engineering Accessories, and we offer hands-on activities at PopUp SCIENCE events to give kids opportunities to create. In addition, learning computer programming empowers kids and gives them tools to communicate in cool ways. Just like foreign languages, it is best to learn the language of computing when you are young. This year we are offering the Summer of Code for kids ages 6-14 in June and July.
